Brewer's Notes: "The India Pale Ale style was developed in the 19th century by British brewers for the troops and colonists living in India. The ale was brewed extra strong and highly hopped to protect it on its long sea voyage. True to the style, our Indica has a higher than average alcohol content (6.5% by volume) balanced by radical bittering from select hops. The result is an ale worthy of its historical name while capturing its own distinctiveness."

I was lucky enough to get this beer half off during a sale, so I had to try it! I was a bit surprised by the strong bitter taste of the hops which led to an initial dislike. However, I'm sure those who enjoy a hoppy beer would enjoy this one. It isn't bad, it just isn't my preference. I'll still drink it ;) It gets a little less harsh after a few sips and definitely becomes more enjoyable. I also appreciate creative labels! I have also tried their Tangerine Wheat Beer which is delicious!
Bittery hops that linger with a semi-dryness. Nice carbonation that flows well over the tongue. Gets smoother as you drink it.

Winemaker's Description: "Zinfandel in America... Primitivo in Italy... Mali Plavac in Croatia.. For more than a millenium, the mystery grape of international viticulture travelled all over the world. Grifone is 100% Primitivo from old Zinfandel vines of Puglia region, a result of a long study made in conjunction with local growers, trying to rediscover the original concentration of fruit, spices and flavours of this historical grape. Our Primitivo is soft and deep with flavorful vanilla notes and a long finish."

Overall Impression
This is very delicious, and surprisingly so! I bought this for $4 from Trader Joe's, and I'm so glad I did! It was slightly unusual than a typical cheap wine with its spicy and herby notes yet very smooth and delicious. It goes down easily and isn't too heavy; it has just the right balance of dark fruit and spice. I would definitely buy and drink again! I want to sip this for hours. I first tried Primitivo at Santa Barbara Winery and fell in love! This is a great varietal.

Color

Aroma
Very aromatic with ripe raspberry, plum, blackberry, and a slight earthiness that is very attractive and inviting. Hints of vanilla.

Flavor
Very smooth with a light spiciness and lovely notes of dark berry complemented by subtle vanilla. A deep silkiness that lingers and just makes you smile. Finally, a smooth, deep, and complex red for a great price!
This came in the Blue Moon variety 12-pack I bought. I was really excited to try a new variety, and was looking forward to the hibiscus they mentioned in the description. However, I wouldn't go into drinking this beer with that expectation; the only floral notes I picked up on were in the aroma. This wasn't bad, but it was a little too hoppy for my taste. It is well balanced though, not too much of an aftertaste and smooth on the tongue. It gets easier and more pleasant after a few sips though, so I will definitely enjoy finishing it off!

Hoppy with notes of citrus; lingers for awhile in the first couple sips. Easy to drink, pleasant. Doesn't taste too different from the usual ale, though (in my opinion).

On the basement level of the historic Santa Maria Inn you will find their wine cellar. Even though we went on a Friday night, this place was absolutely dead (which worked out well for us because we got great service!). We had the privilege of sitting in their cute 'cellar room' with pretty murals on the wall. Luckily for us they were offering a variety of cheese and crackers to go with their tasting! If you actually stay at the Inn they offer you a free tasting which consists of 4 wines of your choosing.

They also offer a variety of board games to play while you sip on your wine, which was a fun addition especially if you haven't played board games in awhile (like me).
Overall Impression
This is very tasty and unique! It isn't too overpoweringly sweet or fruity but is a nice variation away from usual beer. I nearly jumped up and down in the middle of the store when I noticed this new, limited release! I bought a variety 12-pack for $12, and it was well worth it. Although I enjoyed this beer, I don't think I could drink more than one or two at a time because of the sweet flavor.

Color: Darker with a bronzy / coppery tinge with some amber. Mostly clear with light carbonation and a thin off-white head.

Aroma
Crisp and slightly malty.

Flavor
Fruity blackberry with a slight tartness and smooth yet lingering tart and citrus finish. Flirty light carbonation flits around the tongue in waves. We were staying at the Santa Maria Inn and this tasting room happened to be right off the freeway on our exit. We decided to check it out before checking into our hotel, and we are glad we did! The pourer was incredibly friendly and generous and seemed to know a lot of the customers who were already there. A couple of them were pourers at other tasting rooms and we got a lot of great tips on where to go and what to try.

On Friday nights they also hold an event with live music and wine by the glass or bottle. While we were still deciding on which wine to try, the pourer let us have a few tastes on the house and the winemaker even came over to give his recommendations! All in all it was a very fun experience and I'd recommend visiting if you get the chance.

The wines here were great, and it was $10 for a tasting of $6 wines.
This is one of the few tasting rooms in Orcutt, which is located between Los Alamos and Santa Maria in California. It has very cute decor, and it is a twist on the winemaker's family name. One of the owners, Becky, was the pourer who served us. She was very kind and laidback.
I really liked their tasting menu; unlike most places, it encourages you to take notes (albeit simple ones). Next to each wine there is 1, 2, or 3 smiley faces that you mark based on what you like. I also loved their unique labels! Its $10 for a taste of 6 wines.
There are two little tasting rooms in the small town of Los Alamos, California. In my last post I wrote about one of them, Casa Dumetz, and Bedford is right next door to it. There is very simple (almost country-like) decor and a really friendly and knowleadgeable pourer. The wines here were absolutely delicious, I liked each and every one of them. They also had a wine that I had never tried beforecalled Carignane, which was very tasty.

This winery seems to excel in Syrahs - they were absolutely delicious! This cute little tasting room is definitely worth the stop. It was $10 for a tasting of 5 wines.

Chardonnay (2009), $25: "The fruit from the Los Alamos region offers a tropical character of pineapple and melon along excellent acidity. Fruit with this kind of structure warrants barrel fermentation and a completed maloactic fermentation. Not every Chardonnay can handle traditional winemaking, but when it does, the wine becomes unctuous, buttery and complex. This is a rich, full-bodied white with subtle fresh apple, melon notes harmoniously joined by soft toasty oak nuances."

Color - slight golden.

Aroma - sweet and creamy, crisp apple.

Taste - wonderfully and lightly creamy.

Overall - Very pleasant and light, well balanced creaminess with fruity notes.

Chardonnay "Dear Prudence" (2009), $35: "The wine has fresh fruit elements in the nose along with the complexity and richness barrel age supports, and that will increase over time. The crisp acidity makes it a favorite with Dover sole or cracked crab."

Color - bright yellows.

Aroma - slightly crisp, light cream.

Taste - light cream, slightly tart, very smooth.

Carignane (2009), $30: "Carignane originated in Spain in the ancient region of Aragon, where it is now almost non-existent. Yet the varietal has recently found increasing prominence in the Catalan wine region of Priorat, and has been vindicated by a number of young winemakers producing some of the best wines Spain has to offer. The 2009 Carignagne has a deep ruby color and despite bright acids that dance across your tongue, there is a suppleness in the finish. The texture complements the blackberry / black currant flavors backed by the warmth of oak."

Color - deep burgundy with pretty reds.

Aroma - sweet and fruity; raspberry.

Taste - fruit forward, unique, very smooth; chery and strawberry

Comet Holmes Syrah (2007), $25: "Every so often something comes by that takes us by surprise even though we know it’s coming. In 2007 Comet (17P) Holmes paid us a visit during harvest. Usually visible only through a telescope, for unknown reasons it temporarily brightened by a factor of about half a million, in what was the largest known outburst by a comet, and became visible to the naked eye for three days. It also briefly became the largest object in the solar system, as its coma (the thin dissipating dust ball around the comet) expanded to a diameter greater than that of the Sun. A mild mannered, virtually unknown comet out performed its more illustrious brethren. It is a quality this Syrah holds. The 2007 is blend a different cuvees from multiple, local vineyards, each providing different elements to create a complex, intense yet amazingly supple red. The wine deserved its own celebratory title and our visiting comet seemed appropriate. It is deeply colored with a juicy berry, Oriental spice and cool earth character that is enjoyable now though aging will enhance all its properties."

Color - deep burgundy.

Aroma - sweet and strong, bright and lively; blackberry.

Syrah Archive (2007), $30: "From our many Syrah cuvees from 2007, one stood out above all; the lot from Watch Hill Vineyard. You could call tis wine our “Reserve.” The wine hits the mark on every level: amazing concentration; a rich, expansive palate; and the brooding, complex flavors you get from a cool climate Syrah. It is regal in stature with gorgeous fruit flavors but not ostentatious as some over-the-top renditions can be. Definite tannins will encourage you to cellar it, but the array of flavors are so enjoyable now, it will be hard to keep the cork in."

Color - deep burgundy.

Aroma - sweet and fruity.

Taste - fruit forward, semi-sweet, very smooth.

Overall - This was also a delicious Syrah! It was pleasantly fruity, medium bodied, and very smooth.

This is 1 of 2 tasting rooms in the small little town of Los Alamos, which is between the Los Olivos and Santa Maria. We decided to check it out because my friend had seen an article about it in a magazine, and we are so glad we stopped by! The entire town is incredibly tiny, maybe 4 blocks long. There's an old historic hotel, 2 tasting rooms, and a flatbread restaurant that everyone raves about.

Right next door to each other are Casa Dumetz and Bedford. We stopped inside Casa Dumetz first because they had some adorable chic decor that drew our attention. This tasting room is also considered Babi's, named after the winemaker's grandmother. The pourer, Claire if I remember correctly, was incredibly friendly and knowledgeable. We had a great time listening to her stories about the wine and winemaker, and it was a very pleasant experience!
Apparently the winemaker is engaged to Emilio Estevez, Martin Sheen's son. It was very interesting to hear about how they met and also about the gradual creation of this cute little boutique winery. Also, every Friday they have a speaker come and give some fun talks!
For the last 3 years this has been my go-to beer. Its refreshing, tasty, and goes down easy. I don't know a single person who does not like this beer; obviously Shock Top knows what they're doing. This tastes even better if you drink it with an orange slice!
Color
Cloudy with very little carbonation. A bright orangey golden color. Very light foam.
The carbonation hits you first but goes down smooth and silky. No aftertaste. Light citrus all the way through, very pleasant.
Overall Impression
This came in a variety pack, and this was my friend's least favorite (probably because of the wheat). Luckily for me, I got to try it. Its definitely a heavier brew than most Shock Top beers with a very distinct wheat flavor. However, it balances well and goes down smoothly. If you don't mind wheatier beers, you'll probably enjoy this. I am :)
Flavor
Very crisp forward, smooth finish. Rolls over the tongue in waves of ebbing crispness. Definitely taste the wheat.
Overall Impression
You know, I haven't tried this beer up until now because I was slightly disappointed with some of the other flavors I had tried, such as the Honey Applecrisp. However, a good friend of mine happened to have an extra one of these and let me try it. It is delicious! I love it. Definitely a "girly" beer, but it has a very unique taste that can make it a good change of pace from 'normal' beer. I would highly recommend this one! If someone had introduced me to this when I wasn't a big fan of beer (back a couple years) this would've converted me!
Winemaker's Description: "For the 2010 vintage Bodega Calle had access to old vine Perdriel fruit, which offers up rich mocha and plum notes. A small amount of young fruit from La Consulta provides structure and tannin, while limited oak influence keeps the wine bright and fruity. We cannot think of a better everyday 'house' Malbec!"

Overall Impression
I tried this wine at a lovely little wine bistro. This was a very heavy yet smooth red, and it would go lovely with heavier foods such as steak. It seemed to get better as I drank it with more fruits emerging. I loved the finish, and it was very full-bodied. I would recommend this wine as a relatively cheap yet classy wine.

Color
Deep, beautiful and lively reds glisten in the low light of the wine bistro.

Aroma
Bright blackberry, and semi-dry with hints of boysenberry.

Flavor
Full-bodied, semi-dry, and complex. A nice finish of black cherry.

We had heard mixed reviews about this winery, mostly along the lines that it had worsened over time. However, we had a 2 for 1 and decided to give it a shot. It is located near South Coast Winery (a large, corporate winery with a hotel) and it looks like a cute, medium-sized tasting room. Even though it was a Monday, it was absolutely packed. It was nearly impossible to get up to the tasting bar to order a tasting, and a lot of the time it felt as though they really didn't care if you had to wait forever on them.

This, too, is a large, more corporate winery. However, their wines were actually pretty good. If you don't mind fighting the crowds for a spot at the bar, and are willing to spend more time discovering the wines on your own rather than getting the spiel from the pourers, this isn't a bad place to stop.
We weren't planning on visiting this particular winery, but the night previous when we went to Black Market Brewing we meant a bunch of the pourers there. They were extremely friendly and gave us a lot of recommendations for other wineries including Doffo, Polumbo, and Briar Rose (which, unfortunately, we didn't make it to this trip).
The winery and the grounds here are very nice; there's a large, castle-like building that holds the facility and the tasting room, a large fountain in the courtyard, an adjoining restaurant, and lovely views of the vineyard. Inside at the tasting room, they play smooth jazz music. This isn't a typical tasting where you stand up at a bar and have the pourer explain the different wines to you; rather, this is the type where you sit down, choose your (rather expensive) flight, and the pourer brings out 4 different glasses to you at once with a sheet that explains the different wines.
Temecula is a lovely area to try new and different wineries that you've never heard of before. I had heard of Hart before, but never tried them out. It is one of the first tasting rooms off the freeway in the main wine country area, and it is definitely worth a stop. It has a very small tasting room, but beautiful grounds and the opportunity to see their various barrels.

I have a friend who lives in Temecula, and she told me that a bunch of lovely breweries had popped up in the area. One night when we had nothing to do, I convinced my friend to come with me to check one of these places out and we were not disappointed. This particular brewery was open til 9pm, but you need to know where you're going before you ever set out to find it. It is located in an industrial district and has no lights or signs pointing to it; there is only the faint dim light coming from the tinted windows. Know the address before you come!

This was a lovely little brewing company with one small tasting bar and a bunch of picnic tables scattered about. Their selections were written up on chalk boards, and the prices were decent. Every single person we met that night was extremely friendly and knowledgeable, even about wine. We got some great tips on places to go, along with some 2 for 1s! A lot of the pourers from local wineries came here to unwind after their day.

We also had the luck of getting some free pizza since it was already made and the customers had only ordered half. It was homemade and tasty with lots of toppings.

If you like a beer here, I would highly recommend getting a 32 oz. growler for only $8! Most tastes are about $2 each, and they're good sized.

Quadrophenia

Color - nice carbonation; clear and coppery. Dark.

Aroma - crisp.

Taste - sweet and caramelly, almost candied.

ABV - 11%

Overall - It was definitely sweet, but just okay. Only a sipping beer, and I probably wouldn't order again.

Quadrophenia Barrel-Aged

Color - not clear, thick and brown.

Aroma - raisiny and sickeningly sweet.

Taste - raisiny and dark, almost bitter.

ABV - 11%

Overall - too powerfully sweet and syrupy. Only worth the ABV.

Eighty

Color - dark and clear with copper tinges.

Aroma - crisp and light.

Taste - light and refreshing, easy drink; semi-dark, flavors of caramel

ABV - 5%

Overall - Very good and easy drink. Refreshing with pleasant carbonation. I got plenty of recommendations for this from the friendly customers around me.

Like in the last post, this was a very small tasting bottle that we got as part of a Tasting Room set of different Pinot Noirs to try. It had very little in it, barely a single 2 oz. pour, but it was interesting to try the wines from the different regions.

Color - bright, clear burgundy.

Aroma - bright, somewhat raisiny.

Taste - dry forward, lively fruit finish, earthy.

ABV - 13.5%

Overall - Good, semi-dry Pinot. Not amazing, could use more flavor... wouldn't buy again.

There was a deal on Groupon a few months back that sent you mini bottles of different Pinots. This was one of them. I was a very small bottle, perhaps just a small pour, but it gave you enough to taste the Pinot Noirs from the different regions. The company is named Tasting Room.

We had a 2 for 1 for this tasting room and decided to give it a shot. They have some beautiful grounds in the heart of Temecula and some beautiful flowers that bloom in Spring. They have picnic tables outside that you can eat and drink at along with multiple tasting bars inside the main building. Unfortunately, this is a more corporate winery and so if you come here anytime between Friday and Sunday you're in for a very loud and crowded experience.

Because it was so loud, I did not hear any music playing. Minus the people, it was cute decor with pillars, a semi-Spanish style, and numerous tasting bars. They had some cute souvenirs and some relatively friendly pourers. It seems that the rowdier crowd comes here (bachelorette parties and the like), but they also tended to give some generous pours.
I had never heard about this winery before this trip, and actually got the tip from Falkner to go and check it out. This is right down the street in a beautiful little valley surrounded by picturesque hills. The tasting bar is located outside (go to the bathroom before you come!) but it is definitely worth a visit! This place is only open on weekends, so keep that in mind if you decide to visit.
This tasting bar has a very intimate and country feel to it, making for a quaint atmosphere that'll stay in your memory for awhile. The pourers were very friendly, generous and knowledgeable. Of my entire trip to Temecula, I enjoyed the wines here the most! Very pleasant surprise. It is important to keep in mind that this is more of a pricey winery, however.
Taste any 5 wines for $15 (but you can easily find 2 for 1 coupons!). The tasting comes with a small bread, cheese and olive oil plate. My friend and I each tried a different wine so that we could try most of the 11 wines (we skipped the Sauvignon Blanc). Visit their website here.

My family has been a member of Falkner Winery for years now and so I've had the privilege to visit here numerous times. They have some friendly and generous pourers (if you have the chance, get Tricket or Shelly!) and some pretty good wine. The grounds are absolutely beautiful with their outside patio and restaurant looking over the vines and hillsides.

The restaurant connected with the winery is called Pinnacle and is a prime location for weddings in the area of Temecula. They are known for their Lobster Mac n Cheese which, although it sounds weird, is absolutely delicious. It is a must try! Visit their website here.
